As an initial step in the exploration
of this much needed, although highly
immaterial, part of a successful company,
it is important to have a clear vision
of what, exactly, an HCM consultant is.
According to one expert, an HCM consultant
is a professional whose primary function
is to insure the efficient development
and retention of talent within a company
or companies. This is a good definition
for the purposes of attaining a somewhat
clearer picture as to what such a person
will do for a company.
To begin with,
focusing on the “development” aspect
of workforce talent, it can never be
stated enough that the best thing that
a company can do is to motivate its workforce
to increase its capacity for productivity.
This is exactly where an HCM consultant
comes into the picture as someone who
can encourage the development of talent
by matching up a company’s needs
with those of the workers. A superior HCM consultant will provide
services in the area of employee
benefits.
This is one of the most important factors
in what makes an employee decided to
begin work with, and stay on with, a
company. One of the major industry failures
these days is not offering and providing
a benefit package that is attractive
enough to motivate a committed workforce.
Health care, dental, family plans and
401K are among the highest ranking in
a prospective employees checklist, and
many companies lose valuable talent by
not displaying an attractive package
made up of some combination of these.
On the other hand, the drive to
increase profit margins has given
many CEO’s
chagrin at having to dole out too much
coverage, unnecessarily. If nearly all
of the workforce would stay on even if
the benefits were shaved down a little
bit, why would a company waste its resources
on something that wouldn’t be profitable
in the end? A good HCM consultant will
be able to tailor a company’s employee
benefit options to attract and retain
the best talent possible, without forcing
the company to practically go under in
the process.
